the notion of hollow men reflects the droll repetitive jobs entailed in the
industrial economy. the reference to kurtz from conrad’s heart of darkness
(1899) in the opening epigram, reflects a strong thematic bond.
The epigraph contains two pertinent references (http). First, “Mistah Kurtz – he dead” is an allusion to Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.



Hint: Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the CongoFree State, in the heart of Africa, by the story’s narrator Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the RiverThames, London, England.
