The U.S. Civil War spanned across five Aprils. It began with the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina on April 12, 1861. It effectively ended when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
