Police: Three gunshot victims reported after shooting at South Aiken High
Police said three people were shot following a disturbance at Friday night’s basketball game between Aiken and South Aiken high schools.
The shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m., according to Lt. Karl Odenthal, with the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Odenthal said officers were working the game and as the game was letting out, the officers on scene were moving toward a disturbance when shots rang out.
After the shooting, people attending the basketball game were asked to stay inside the gym, according to an Aiken Standard sports reporter who was covering the game.
Police could not immediately confirm exactly where on campus the shooting took place, but judging by where police tape was placed, authorities said it most likely was in front of the entrance of the school.
South Aiken is located off Pine Log Road.
Odenthal initially said there were two victims after the shooting – one who was transported from the scene and another person who was away from the school and went to a restaurant across from the school.
“They called us and said they were injured from the game over here,” Odenthal said from the scene.
He could not confirm the restaurant, but police and emergency personnel were seen at Arby’s off Whiskey Road.
Odenthal later confirmed with the Aiken Standard that there was a third victim.
The condition of the injured was unknown as of press time.
The Aiken County School District later released a statement, saying, “As many students and families are aware, there were gunshots fired just outside near the front entrance of South Aiken High School following a basketball game” on Friday night.
