The dry cleaning industry is a primary consumer of a toxic chemical researchers suspect may be causing mental illness.



The industrial solvent used in the majority of American dry cleaners has always been risky business. Perchloroethylene is suspected of causing kidney and liver damage and nervous system problems, and, according to a newly released evaluation of the chemical by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it’s likely to cause cancer.

Although perc is the most common cleaning solvent used in the dry cleaning industry, it is also suspected of causing cancer and has been found to be moderately toxic to people. It is classified as a pollutant in both air and water regulations. Its disposal is regulated as a hazardous waste.
