When will the 2017 Winter Solstice take place in the Northern Hemisphere?
The 2017 Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere – the shortest day of the year, considered the start of winter – will occur on Dec. 21. Solstices are opposite on either side of the equator, meaning that while North America, Central America, Europe, Asia and northern Africa will celebrate the Winter Solstice, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Southern Africa will experience the Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.
