What was the name of the orca in captivity at SeaWorld who became the focus of the documentary “Blackfish”?
Fans of “Free Willy” will be in for a surprise when they check out the documentary “Blackfish.” While one is a family-friendly film, the latter covers the tough subject of killer whales in captivity, focusing on Tilikum, an orca at SeaWorld. The documentary debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and SeaWorld was not fond of how the film presented the organization or trainer Dawn Brancheau, who Tilikum killed. The documentary would later have a television premiere on CNN. Source: CNN
Tilikum, nicknamed Tilly, was a notorious captive killer whale or orca. He was captured in Iceland in 1983 at Hafnarfjörður, near Reykjavík. About a year later, he was transferred to Sealand of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia.
