Which member of The Brady Bunch suffered from “Middle Child Syndrome”?
Answer: Middle child syndrome is the feeling of exclusion by middle children (those with one younger and one older sibling). Probably the most well-known television character to suffer from middle child syndrome is Jan Brady in the sitcom The Brady Bunch. Eve Plumb became famous for playing the middle sister, Jan, on the hit television sitcom from 1969 to 1974. Several episodes of the show centered on Jan’s jealousy of older sister Marcia, resulting in the famous “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!” line that has arguably become the quintessential quote of the series.
Jan Brady – née Jan Martin, later Jan Brady-Covington (center left) was portrayed by Eve Plumb in the TV series, The Brady Girls Get Married, The Brady Brides, A Very Brady Christmas and The Bradys. Since Plumb was unable to return at the time, Geri Reischl replaced her in The Brady Bunch Hour. Jennifer Elise Cox portrayed the character in the two theatrical films, and Ashley Drane in the TV movie. Jan is the middle Brady daughter and many of her storylines, often involve Jan being jealous of her seemingly more popular older sister Marcia, or her awkward position as the middle child.
