Julia Dent Grant
Julia Dent Grant, wife of President Ulysses S. Grant, is also buried in the Grant Tomb facility. Born on a plantation near St. Louis, Illinois, Julia married Grant in 1848. She would accompany her military husband to military posts, as was the norm at the time. When he received orders to report to the Western frontier in 1852, she returned to her parents’ home for safety reasons. She penned her memoir late in life and it went unpublished until 1975.
