Which sport awards the oldest trophy in international sports?
A group of businessmen, all members of the prestigious New York Yacht Club, sailed to England to participate in a yacht race. Queen Victoria was watching the race as the schooner named ‘America’ passed her Royal Yacht to take the lead. The ‘America’ went on to beat all of the best British yachts put out to challenge her; in the end, she won the 100 Pound Cup from the Royal Yacht Squadron. This victory symbolized the ascendance of the new world as the undisputed maritime power. Thus, the America’s Cup, named after the schooner and not the nation, was born.
Yachting refers to the use of recreational boats and ships called yachts for sporting purposes. Yachts are different from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose. Both terms originate from the Dutch word jacht (“hunt”). With sailboats, it is called sailing, and with motorboats, it is called powerboating.
